Turning houses into homes

To end homelessness we have to do more than simply provide a roof over someone’s head. We need to help people create places where they can thrive and can truly call home. That’s what Hope at Home sets out to achieve.

Some people who have previously experienced homelessness will already have furniture and other items they need to get started when moving into a Flagship-owned home. But many don’t, and those are the people Hope at Home is designed to help.

We supply packages of:

  • Furniture such as sofas, tables, chairs and beds
  • Large appliances like cookers, washing machines, fridge/freezers and televisions
  • Small appliances such as toasters, kettles, crockery, cutlery and vacuum cleaners
  • Bedding
  • Carpet and other flooring

The people we help don’t just have to take whatever is on offer. They receive a catalogue and can choose the colours, styles, and finishes that they like most. We think this helps people build a sense of ownership and pride in their new surroundings.

It’s having an impact

From April 2024 to March 2025 we supported 670 people – including 262 children – through Hope at Home. 82% - later told us they would have gone without or gone into debt if Hopestead had not been around or able to help. Furthermore, 90% feel more positive about the future and more settled in their new home, and 55% felt more able to manage their finances and household.

Warren’s Story

Warren* faced a sudden and serious health condition that resulted in long-term health issues, leaving him unable to work. As a result, he lost both his home and his family. After undergoing extensive rehabilitation, Warren was discharged and moved in with his sibling’s family, sleeping in their front room. While he was grateful for their care, the situation placed strain on the entire household and left him without privacy or personal space.

Recognising the need for stability, Flagship offered Warren a new home. His family rallied around him, using social media to gather essential household items, including white goods and furniture. However, he was still missing a bed and a wardrobe with a mirror—something particularly important to him, as he struggled to see well enough to shave each morning.

Hopestead stepped in to provide Warren with a comfortable bed and the much-needed wardrobe and mirror, ensuring he had everything required to settle into his new home.

“My new home has given me my life back. I am looking forward to the freedom of moving around my own space. My recovery can really start from now, as it’s easier to exercise and have health professionals visit me at home.”

PIPPA'S STORY

Pippa* fled domestic abuse with her children. They were sofa surfing with friends and family for seven months before their new
home with Flagship became available.

“We couldn’t stay in one place too long, so I kept the peace by telling the kids we were having sleep overs.”

Pippa had beds for the children but had to leave hers behind. We provided a voucher to enable Pippa to purchase the immediate essential kitchen items so the family could have hot meals and some curtains for privacy in their new home. Pippa also received furniture packages for her two-bed home, a bed for herself and a dining table so they could eat together again. We also arranged flooring throughout her home and all white
goods to be delivered as soon as possible.

Reflecting on what the support has meant for her life, Pippa said “Every day is getting better. Half the things I had to worry about, have just gone. I’ve got a lovely house now”.

Pippa is still settling into her new surroundings; she wants to get the children into new schools and then start to refocus and rebuild her life. She left her business behind in her previous home, so life looks different now, but she is ready for the challenge.

It’s standing out

Hope at Home’s impact certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed. The programme was named Homelessness Project of the Year at the UK Housing Awards in November 2024, ahead of nine other shortlisted projects from around the country.

Judges described Hope at Home as the most innovative project they had seen that year.
They said: “Hopestead has identified a gap in the provision that too many homeless people are being dropped into empty properties.
“They worked out that when you fully furnish a home, people want to stay there. It’s a vote of confidence in its residents, a recognition that they deserve to be trusted with brand new goods.”
